Finally getting back to my Server setup.

Postby Heeter » Fri Mar 14, 2008 7:54 am

Hi All,

After a brief fling taking care of some stuff, I am back configging my debian server. (Debian Etch 4RC3)

This is what I am going to be using:

Web Server: Apache 2.2
Database Server: MySQL 5.0
Mail Server: Postfix
DNS Server: BIND9
FTP Server: proftpd
POP3/IMAP: I will use Maildir format and therefore install Courier-POP3/Courier-IMAP.
Squirrelmail.
Webalizer
ISPConfig

Will want to use this as a NFS file server as well. Wondering how XP/Vista workstations will work with this Server? I have never setup a windows workstation to a linux fileserver. Any thoughts? Should I load all files onto linux ext partitions or keep them on the ntfs drives as slaves? Got about 200gigs of files to move.

Is there a better recommendation for the server apps?

Thanks,

Heeter

Why not use samba? You can however set up windows to use nfs, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324055

You do not need to use ntfs for your data storage on linux. Windows will be able to read/write to ext across the network.

Its been a while since I've ran a webserver, but in the past I've used FreeBSD with qmail for my mail servers. Xistence has an excellent tutorial for it at bsdguides. I'm not sure how easily it translates to linux.

Maybe Samba would be the way to go then, read somewhere that Windows workstations had an easier time with read/write on NFS. I would rather go with Samba myself, though.

I have always had trouble with FreeBSD and my RAID cards, Installing FreeBSD onto my two Promise RAID setups never worked.

Thanks for your input.
