BSOD.....

Postby magnox » Wed Nov 12, 2008 12:32 pm

Sorry, I added this post to my thread about 'new ram not recognised' , but the thread might be considedered old now. So I've reposted it in this new thread........................

Hey all,

with the 2 sticks of 512mb, I got the BSOD quite a bit so I'm running with just one at the moment.

Now, I get the BSOD regular too. Mostly, 0x0000008e type. The strange thing is, I get it if I try to run an Adaware scan and Spybot SD was that bad for crashing and hanging, I had to remove it.

I tried reseating ram and video and have even updated video driver, but that just gave a different type of code in the BSOD, so I rolled it back.

I have WinDb in and look at the crash dumps, but I'm no expert and they say probably caused by Ntosknl.exe

I thought it was a ram/video/driver issue, but the way that antispyware apps. hang and fail, I'm wondering if there's something I can't find inside. I use AVG and have looked at HJThis logs and have used antirootkit procedures/info. from Symantec but all to no avail.

I think I'm stuck!

It sounds hardware related. What is the different stop error with the updated driver? Random BSOD are almost always RAM related, but if its the same error, that could signify a specific problem. You could possibly have a bad video card?

I'm no expert in crash dumps either, but I would think that ntosknl.exe would always be there since that is the operating system kernel. Kernel dumps are going to be related to the kernel.

Hi,

I can't recall exactly the other error and a cleaner tool has removed the old crash dumps, but 0x0000007a rings a bell with me, with the BSOD mentioning driver irql not less or equal.

Memtest runs fine with no fails. I too suspected the video card at one point, but I don't have a spare card to swap-in and try.

My other thought was maybe a mobo fault, but ime will tell, meanwhile If I can get a video card to try and rule this out I will.

If memtest complete then I would say with confidence it is not the RAM. Do you have the latest BIOS for your motherboard?

I think there is a bios update available, but I'd read many things about ppl having problems with them, so it was easier to forget about it, I suppose I don't have much to lose. ( except my data, which I back up !)

Thanks for your help,

I would do the BIOS update. They used to be kinda rough, but the newer PC's have easy to use BIOS tools.
